Everything You Need to Know About Synthetic Oil for Your Vehicle

Everything You Need to Know About Synthetic Oil for Your Vehicle

Your car requires engine oil in order to function properly. It is the oil that lubricates all of the moving parts within your engine, so getting it changed regularly is a crucial component of vehicle maintenance. Within the engine oil category, you have two options: conventional and synthetic. Conventional oil is typically used in older cars, while newer cars can often choose either one. Here's what you need to know to decide which is right for you.

Performance

Synthetic oil was originally designed to solve many of the common problems with conventional motor oil. For starters, synthetic oil is thinner than conventional oil. What this means for you is that synthetic oil doesn't need to warm up as much to flow smoothly through your engine, so you no longer need to wait for your engine to warm before driving away. Synthetic oil is also far more resistant to degradation and build-up than conventional oil, meaning less frequent oil changes.

Oil Change Frequency

Traditional wisdom said to change your engine oil every 3,000 miles. Depending on how far you drive each day, this could be quite frequent. With each oil change, you'll also have to pay the associated labor costs and may need to change the oil filter. Synthetic oil, on the other hand, is designed to last much longer. Most mechanics and manufacturers recommend changing synthetic oil about every 7,500 miles.

In general, synthetic oil is a bit more expensive than conventional oil. However, because you have to change your oil and filters less frequently over time, you'll save money on labor costs in the long run.

However, this also depends on the specific manufacturer of the vehicle, as some include larger oil tanks than others. Some vehicles require synthetic oil to be changed every 5,000 miles, while others can get by for up to 15,000 miles before needing an oil change. Check your owner's manual, or ask your mechanic for the specific guidelines for your particular vehicle.

Cost

In general, synthetic oil is a bit more expensive than conventional oil. However, because you have to change your oil and filters less frequently over time, you'll save money on labor costs in the long run. In addition, the improved performance of synthetic oil means that there will be less wear and tear on your engine over the years, saving you even more money on repair costs over the life of your vehicle.
