Prepare Your Vehicle for Your Summer Road Trip

Prepare Your Vehicle for Your Summer Road Trip

You spend lots of time planning what items you will pack for your road trip, both what you will need at your destination and what you will need while on the road. However, it's important to think about your car itself as well. Proper care and maintenance will ensure your vehicle is ready to hit the road at a moment's notice. Here's what you need to do.

Change Your Oil

Your engine needs fresh, clean oil in order to operate efficiently and smoothly. For older cars, the recommendation was to change your oil every 3,000 miles. These days, many newer cars use synthetic oil, which can last 5,000 miles or more. Check your owner's manual or ask your mechanic to verify the specific oil change schedule for your particular vehicle and oil type. If you know you have a road trip coming up, you may want to change your oil before you go, even if it isn't quite needed yet, to ensure you don't have to stop at an auto shop during your vacation, taking you away from having fun with your family.

Check All Your Fluids

Between transmission fluid, brake fluid, coolant and more, your car requires a lot of fluids. Before you depart, check the levels of all your fluids, and have your mechanic top off any that are getting a bit low. Your mechanic can advise you if any of your fluids need to be flushed as well. Flushing your fluids gets rid of any debris or build-up that has accumulated, replacing contaminated fluids with fresh ones.

Adjust Your Tire Pressure

Even the tiniest leak in one of your tires can diminish the tire pressure over time. When your tires are under-inflated, your car has to work harder to move forward, reducing your fuel efficiency and putting added strain on your engine. Before you leave, check all of your tires and adjust the pressure according to your manufacturer's guidelines. If a particular tire is especially low, have your mechanic check it for leaks or punctures. Check the treads as well to determine whether you need new tires before you hit the road.
