Save Money with Routine Vehicle Maintenance

Save Money with Routine Vehicle Maintenance

Many people put car maintenance off as long as possible; however, that practice could end up costing you money. Auto technicians don't simply change the oil when you bring your vehicle in for maintenance. A good tech will check your vehicle for upcoming issues, such as worn brakes, tires, belts, filters and more.

Routine Maintenance

Routine maintenance not only keeps your vehicle in good working order, it also extends the life of your car. In a nutshell, routine maintenance means checking and changing any part that exhibits wear and tear, such as brakes, tires, belts, and hoses. It also means topping off fluids and checking for leaks.

The manufacturer of your vehicle publishes recommended routine maintenance based on the average time parts wear out or fluids get dirty. Ignoring maintenance could void the warranty on your vehicle in some cases.

Extend the Life of Your Vehicle

You may be wondering how routine maintenance extends the life of your vehicle. That depends on the maintenance. For example, an oil change could significantly extend the life of your vehicle. Oil gets dirty, which means it gets thick. If the oil is too thick, it takes longer to travel through the oil passages in the engine, leaving moving parts with tight tolerances dry. That means metal moving against metal, especially as the metal expands when the vehicle warms up – and if metal rubs metal, it quickly wears out. The oil protects the moving parts from heating up too fast and rubbing against their metal sleeves.

Once the engine wears out, the tolerances won't be tight and the engine will emit that embarrassing plume of smoke as you are driving. This is because the engine is worn and oil is flowing past the piston rings and out through the exhaust. This also causes problems with how the vehicle runs since the oil could interfere with the proper amount of fuel and air in the combustion cylinder.

Routine Vehicle Maintenance Checklist

When you bring your vehicle into AutoTek for service for the first time, our technicians will complete an exhaustive bumper-to-bumper check of all systems on your vehicle. As long as you bring your vehicle in for maintenance after that, we will follow the manufacturer's recommended services for the proper service intervals. However, we will check your vehicle from bumper to bumper anytime you ask us to.

Here is a comprehensive list of what should be checked during a routine vehicle maintenance check:

  • Accessories: Drive belt, check for bearing noise in the accessories, check alternator to ensure it is charging, check air conditioning compressor, power steering pump and other accessories

  • Brakes: Brake pads, shoes, calipers, wheel cylinders, rotors, drums, brake lines, master cylinder, emergency brake

  • Cooling: Radiator, antifreeze level, fans, thermostat

In a nutshell, routine maintenance means checking and changing any part that exhibits wear and tear, such as brakes, tires, belts, and hoses. It also means topping off fluids and checking for leaks.

  • Drivability- Tune up components, fuel injection, emission controls, including sensors

  • Electrical- Visible wiring, plugs

  • Engine- Oil level, change oil, freeze plugs, leaks, valve covers

  • Heating and Cooling- Air compressor, dryer, condenser, heater core, heater hoses, coolant (Freon)

  • Lubrication- Oil pressure, change oil and filter

  • Suspension and Steering- Check all suspension and steering components, check power steering fluid level, check pump, lines and rack for leaks

  • Tires and Wheels- Check for tread wear, improper alignment, balancing, bent rims
